Professionals’ shortage main challenge to IT development

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): The Ministry of Telecommunication and Information Technology (MCIT) says the shortage of professionals remains the main challenge in the country’s IT sector development.

Mohammad Fahim Hashemi, acting Telecommunication and IT minister, talking to the inauguration ceremony of first IT laboratory for research here, said he was happy taking a positive step towards improvement of the sector.

He said creation of such centers and facilitating students through practical work in IT area was very important.

“In future, students would get benefit of this IT laboratory which is created by MTN telecom company for research and practical learning”, he said.

He said IT development was important for economic development, ensuring security and improving human resources. Hashemi asked other private companies to invest in the sector so it would also help IT students get practical experience and join the job market.

Ebbad Reza, MTN telecom company’s head in Afghanistaninfo-icon, talking to the ceremony, said, “We created these opportunities for students who want to do research in IT, we are trying to give them a chance of practical educationinfo-icon in this area,”

“That is the reason we created it in the Information and Telecommunications Technology Institute (ICTI), we will provide all needed assistance for the improvement of education in this particular area,” he said. Reza said the laboratory cost $80,000.

Shafi Sahrifi, head of ICTI, said that Afghanistan was placed in the lowest position in scientific innovations but the IT laboratory would help resolve the issue to some extent.
